Chapter 8

~ Kimi ~

Kimi tried not to scare Max, but she had to get inside. She had to pack. They needed to get out of Alaska.

“Kimi!” Wanda said, pulling her arm. “Stop!”

“We have to go. Now. We’ll drop the truck somewhere. I don’t even know where, but we have to get out of Alaska.”

“No!”

“What do you mean, no?”

“That’s what I mean. I’m not going anywhere.”

“Wanda—”

“Kimi, look. I freaked out, too. But…what are the chances anyone will see a girl chasing a horse in Alaska.”

Kimi huffed out a breath. “They always do. I don’t know how, but they always find us.”

Wanda stared off at the pond, then the trees. “They won’t find us this time. Besides—” Wanda grabbed her when she tried to walk off. “Listen to me. We’re not even at the ranch anymore. And we’re not at a ranch. They’ve been finding us at ranches. We’re at a private residence now. There’s no one for miles. How in the world will they find us here?”

Kimi bit down on her lip and clenched her fists. “I don’t know,” she cried, “but they always do.”

Her sister wrapped her arms around her. “They won’t find us this time. I promise.”

Kimi pulled back. “How can you promise that?”

Wanda sighed. “I just know. I’m not leaving. You have a job to do. I’ll help if you want.” She waved her hand at the house. “You might have a new babysitter. She seemed to really like Max. I’ll help. Maybe Erik will pay us more. Then,” she rested her hands on Kimi’s shoulders, “we can leave. In three months when we have enough money to—” Wanda looked over her head.

Kimi turned, Max holding on tighter as she swung around. “He’s too close, Wanda. We’re getting too close.”

“I’m not.”

“No,” Kimi relented. “I know this wasn’t you. I did this. But you don’t need to get any closer to Daire either.”

Wanda shrugged. “Daire isn’t interested in me. He wasn’t just on TikTok; he was texting a girl under the table.”

Kimi was worried that their pursuers were going to come and take Max, and Wanda was worried that she couldn’t attract Daire. “Is that why you don’t want to leave? Daire? Really?” She started walking again, and Wanda caught up.

“No. I told you. He isn’t interested in me. But I can’t keep doing this. We need to finish this job then move out of the country, as you suggested.”

Kimi heard the cart behind them but ignored it. She stepped up her pace, but it was no use. She wasn’t able to outrun a motorized vehicle.

The engine whined behind them, and she stepped to the side of the road. “We’re fine, Erik. Just a bit… I don’t like people posting pictures of me. It’s…”

“Against our beliefs,” Wanda said quickly.

Erik looked up but resisted a full-out eye roll. “Against your religion? Are you Amish?”

“No…” Wanda groused, hands on her narrow hips. “It’s something our Puse—excuse me, grandmother, taught us.” Kimi didn’t remember that teaching, but she allowed Wanda to use it as an excuse for their odd behavior.
